Google unveils Artificial Intelligence-infused tools in Gmail, Docs, and more to compete with Microsoft

Google is racing to keep up with competitors in the AI arena by introducing methods to create text and images with the help of machine learning in its Workspace products.

Google recently revealed a set of artificial intelligence-driven attributes that will be available soon on their Workspace applications, such as Google Docs, Gmail, Sheets, and Slides.

Google Docs now offers AI-powered features for generating, summarizing, and brainstorming text (similar to OpenAI’s ChatGPT), while Gmail can generate entire emails from users’ brief bullet points. Slides, meanwhile, can generate AI-generated imagery, audio, and video to illustrate presentations (akin to Microsoft Designer, powered by OpenAI’s DALL-E, and Canva, powered by Stable Diffusion).

Google’s recent announcement has revealed their enthusiasm to become involved in the recent AI race. Since ChatGPT’s appearance last year and Microsoft’s launch of its chatbot-enabled Bing in February, the search giant has been working to develop similar AI features. Reportedly, the company declared a “code red” in December, resulting in senior management instructing staff to incorporate AI tools into all of their user products, which are used by billions of people, within a few months.

Google has made public a variety of new features, but only the first one–AI writing tools in Docs and Gmail–will be available to a select group of “trusted testers” in the US this month. This is similar to the way Google unveiled its ChatGPT competitor, Bard. The other features will eventually be available to the public, although the exact time wasn’t specified.

For instance, HR professionals may benefit from the ability to create custom job descriptions, while parents may find it helpful to generate an initial draft of a birthday invitation. With the help of an Al partner, users can further refine and edit their drafts, obtaining additional suggestions as needed.

Google has said that a new feature will allow users to revise or lengthen text with the help of AI. To illustrate, they gave the example of taking a few bullet points from a work meeting and transforming them into a well-crafted synopsis, offering the option to set the tone of the summary as either “whimsical” or “formal”. Additionally, the video demo from Google showed AI writing personalized marketing messages from bullet points and summarizing the contents of a lengthy email thread in Gmail. (This isn’t a groundbreaking concept, as Slack has recently announced they will be using ChatGPT to generate summaries of conversations.)

Rumors suggest that Microsoft is incorporating similar features into its Office suite of apps, such as Word, Teams and Outlook. Earlier this year, the launch of the new Bing by Microsoft CEO Satya Nadella posed a challenge to Google for the use of AI-assisted search. It looks like the two companies will be in a battle for productivity software as well. Microsoft has set a date for an event on March 16th to talk about “AI and the future of work“.

The pressing need to launch AI products has potential drawbacks as well. AI text generation tools are generally unreliable, creating and displaying false content with absolute assurance. Additionally, these programs often reproduce any racial or gender prejudices found in their training data.

Google’s integration of AI into its enterprise software could produce disastrous results if the technology fails. Consider, for instance, the possibility of AI-generated summaries of meetings attributing incorrect quotations or ideas, or marketing emails creating fictitious clients or products. In the press release, Google acknowledged that AI is sometimes wrong, offbeat, and needs guidance, but people may not find humor in an AI error which costs them money like they do when Microsoft’s Bing chatbot goes awry.
