Associated Content Optimization

Startup SEO Project

The Challenge

The challenge for this startup business was to create one of the first, large user-generated content websites on the Internet while staying within budget and creating a profit not only for the group of owners but also for the content generators. The profit would be created by running Google ads on the pages and then sharing profits between owners and content creators. We were brought in at the beginning to help with some of the SEO framework for the website along with ongoing SEO development as content was starting to be added.

The Solution

The solution was a two-pronged approach. First, traditional national / international SEO was implemented including technical SEO. Automating some of the SEO tasks was a desire of the owners in order to avoid the expense of ongoing manual SEO intervention, so this was addressed.

Second, there were no content creators when the site first rolled out, so an intense promotional campaign ensued to bring content creators to the website, convince them of the merits and encourage them to tell others. Content writer properties (such as the Writer’s Digest book, magazine and website) were target for ads.

We are a team of experts

We are a team of Internet marketing experts based in Orange County, CA. We have expertise in SEO, PPC, Web Design, Email Marketing, Press Release marketing and more. We have been doing high level work, with excellent results for the past 15 years.

The Associated Content challenge was especially large since the ambitions were big and there was nothing like this site on the Internet when it rolled out. We loved the concept, however, and were quick to jump onboard.

The Results

Even though the website spent some time in the ill-named “Google Sandbox” the website, afterwards exploded with growth from both readers and content creators. One of its biggest rivals at the time was About.com (now known as DotDash.com) and Associated Content was gaining ground quickly. The growth from the beginning, in regard to traffic and revenue was in the multiple thousands of percent. In 2010, Associated Content was purchased by Yahoo for $90 million and became known as Yahoo Voices.
