Google Rolls Out More Robust Test My Site Tool

Since mobile device users now surpass desktop users, Google just made their Test My Site tool a lot more robust. Now, instead of a simple pass or fail, the Google tool scans your website and passes along information such as your website’s mobile speed, an estimated number of visitors you may be losing due to slower speeds, how your website compares to its competition and tips on how to make your website load faster.

According to Google:

  • Your site’s mobile speed: 50% of people expect a site to load in less than two seconds.3 Find out how fast your site loads.
  • The number of visitors you may be losing: When it comes to mobile speed, every second matters – for each additional second it takes a mobile page to load, conversions can drop by up to 20%.4 Learn how many people may be leaving your site during the time it takes to load.
  • How you compare to the competition: See how your business stacks up against others in your industry.
  • How to make your site faster: We’ll email you a personalized assessment with specific recommendations on how to speed up your site.

Google gives one example of a small business that was able to increase the mobile load time from 26 seconds to 5 seconds using the revamped Test My Site tool and tips.

I’ve used the test tool on this website and was emailed a couple of helpful tips which I am now taking action on which include “Eliminate render-blocking JavaScript and CSS in above-the-fold content” and “Reduce server response time.”

If Samuel L. Jackson happened to be looking over my shoulder at this minute, he wouldn’t say “What’s in your wallet?” but rather “What’s on your website?”
